The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’ ” Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’ ” Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” Matthew 4:3-11 (NIV)
In Matthew Chapter 4 we have the account of Satan tempting Jesus after He had been fasting for forty days. Jesus was fully human and fully God so, on the human side, you can bet He was hungry. Satan thought he had a shot at appealing to the flesh, but Jesus was not having it. He knew His sustenance did not come from food alone but the words of His Father. The second attempt was really a challenge of Jesus' authority. Satan led Him up to the top of the temple and challenged Him to throw Himself down and call angels to rescue Him. Satan again thought he was being so clever that he quoted scripture to the Creator of it. Jesus made it clear that He was not going to be tested. The final attempt was an outright attack on Jesus' deity. It took a lot of gall to tell Jesus He would be given the kingdoms of the world if only He would bow down and worship Satan. Jesus has had it by this point. He tells Satan to leave and that there is only one God to serve. Boom, drop the mic! The reality of this whole interaction is that Jesus knew the authority He possessed. The rest was irrelevant because people were and still are His priority to this day.
The enemy has no new tactics, he just wraps them differently to try and get us to abdicate our authority. We are the sons and daughters of the Most High King and we walk in His power!
In what areas do you need to tell the enemy he no longer can keep you from the victorious life and benefits God has for you? You have the power to stand for what you believe.
