Tomorrow is Monday. Even though I enjoy my job, when I think of Monday, my first
thought is usually, “Ugh.”
There are quite a few Bible verses about working hard, but there are two that really get me through the workday. I really like this verse in Proverbs about working to become good at your job: Proverbs 22:29 (GW) Do you see a person who is efficient in his work? He will serve kings. He will not serve unknown people.
Even though I can get a case of the Mondays from time to time, I remind myself that God calls me not only to work, but to do my job well. It doesn’t matter if it is my secular job or my ministerial duties, God is expecting me to do a good job, and at some point, I will be rewarded for it. It’s not just about personal rewards, though, since we are also called to lead by example, and doing a good job is certainly the example I want to set. My other favorite is Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 (ESV) I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and do good as long as they live; also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil- this is God’s gift to man.
I want to serve kings, but more importantly, the King of kings. If I am going to do that, I have to be diligent to do a good, efficient job, and find ways to take pleasure in the work- even on a Monday! With Jesus and a good cup of coffee, I know I can get it done!
