Have you ever gone somewhere with a friend and said you would follow them in your car? And by follow, you simply meant you were behind them and would be there in a little while? Or you are on social media and choose to “follow” an account?
There is something so casual about following your friend to a mutual location, meaning you would get there when you arrived. Or, by following an account on social media, you will check in whenever convenient. Neither is pressing or too critical.
I came across this verse the other day and it made me think about what it means to follow. Psalm 23:6 “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”
The first part of this verse in the New Living Translation says, "Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life.” I was struck by the word “pursue” when reading that version, because to pursue expresses intent and purpose, perhaps a sense of urgency. It’s a very different perspective from a casual “follow.”
King David declares that God’s goodness and unfailing love will pursue him throughout his life. How amazing is that? Goodness and unfailing love have been given purpose and intent here. They are to seek me out all the days of my life. What an incredible thought the Lord is communicating to us!
Remember this verse. If you feel down, maybe you are alone and think God doesn’t care. His goodness and unfailing love are pursuing you all the days of your life. It brings comfort to know how much He loves you and that His goodness is intentional with you!
